Most High, all-powerful, all-good Lord,

All praise is Yours, all glory,

all honour and all blessings.

To you alone, Most High,

do they belong,

and no mortal lips are worthy to pronounce Your Name.

“가장 높으시고, 전능하시고, 최고의 선하신 주님이시여,

모든 찬양은 모든 영광,

모든 존귀, 모든 복을 주님께만 돌립니다.

그 모든 것이 가장 높으신 주님 한 분께만 속하였사오니

그 무엇이든 주님의 이름을 감히 부를 자가 없습니다.

 

Praised be You my Lord with all Your creatures,

especially Sir Brother Sun,

Who is the day through whom You give us light.

And he is beautiful and radiant with great splendour,

Of You Most High, he bears the likeness.

나의 주님이시여, 주님의 모든 피조물과 찬양을 드립니다.

특별히, 형제 태양의 찬양을 받으시옵소서,

그는 낮이 되고, 그를 통하여 주님은 우리에게 빛을 주십니다.

그는 아름답고 거대한 광채로 빛을 내며

가장 높으신 분, 주님의 모습을 품습니다.

 

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon and the stars,

In the heavens you have made them bright, precious and fair.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brothers Wind and Air,

And fair and stormy, all weather’s moods,

by which You cherish all that You have made.

주님이시여, 누이 달과 별들의 찬양을 받으시옵소서,

주님이 해맑고, 고귀하고, 아름답게 만드셔서 하늘에 두신 것들입니다.

주님이시여, 형제 바람과 화창하고 폭풍 어린 공기,

온갖 날씨를 통해 찬양을 받으시옵소서,

주님은 주님께서 만드신 모든 것들을 자라게 하십니다.

 

Praised be You my Lord through Sister Water,

So useful, humble, precious and pure.

Praised be You my Lord through Brother Fire,

through whom You light the night and he is beautiful and playful and robust and strong.

주님이시여, 누이 눈물을 통해 찬양을 받으시옵소서

아주 가치 있고, 겸손하고, 고귀하고 순결한 누이입니다.

주님이시여, 형제 불을 통하여 찬양을 받으소서

그를 통해 주님은 밤을 밝히시고,

그는 아름답고 장난기 많으며 힘이 세고 강합니다.

 

Praised be You my Lord through our Sister,

Mother Earth

who sustains and governs us,

producing varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Praise be You my Lord through those who grant pardon for love of You and bear sickness and trial.

주님이여, 우리의 자매, 어머니인 지구를 통하여 영광을 받으소서.

그녀는 이 땅을 유지하며 다양한 꽃과 허브와

여러 종류의 과일을 만듭니다.

주님이시여, 주님의 사랑으로 용서를 베풀고,

병과 시련을 겪는 사람들을 통하여

찬양을 받으소서.

 

Blessed are those who endure in peace,

By You Most High, they will be crowned.

평화 속에서 참는 자들을 복을 주옵소서.

가장 높으신 분이신 주님을 통하여 그들이 영광을 누릴 것입니다.

 

Praised be You, my Lord through Sister Death,

from whom no-one living can escape.

Woe to those who die in mortal sin!

Blessed are they She finds doing Your Will.

No second death can do them harm.

주님이시여, 누이의 죽음을 통하여 찬양을 받으시옵소서

살아 있는 사람은 아무도 피할 수 없는 것입니다.

죽을 죄를 짓고 죽은 자에게는 화가 있을 것입니다.

주님의 뜻을 따라 죽는 자들에게는 복이 있을 것입니다.

두 번째 죽음이 그들을 해치지 못할 것입니다.

 

Praise and bless my Lord and give Him thanks,

And serve Him with great humility.”

내 주님을 찬양하고 송축하며 그에게 감사를 돌리며

*해설*

프란치스코는 위에 소개된 시(기도문) 《태양의 찬가》(Canticum Fratris Solis 또는 Laudes Creaturarum)으로 인하여 문학평론가들에 의해 이탈리아 최초의 시인으로 여겨지고 있다. 일반 평민들은 자신들의 언어로 하나님께 기도할 수 있다고 생각했던 그는 종종 라틴어 대신에 움브리아 방언으로 글을 쓰곤 하였다. 그가 저술한 글들은 문학적으로나 종교적으로나 대단한 가치를 지닌 것으로 평가받고 있다. 그의 기도문에 비 인격체에게 형제, 누이, 어머니라는 표현은 범신론적 입장이라기보다 문학적 표현, 시적 표현이며, 자연과 동화하는 그의 영적 세계임을 볼 수 있다.
