우상파괴자의 삶
그 성읍 사람들이 아침에 일찍이 일어나 본즉 바알의 제단이 파괴되었으며 그 곁의 아세라가 찍혔고 새로 쌓은 제단 위에 그 둘째 수소를 드렸는지라. (사사기 6:28)
8일 아침(낮)입니다.
“베는 사람” “부수는 자”라는 이름 뜻처럼 기드온은 이스라엘 역사에서 괄목할만한 우상파괴자입니다. 그는 바알의 제단을 파괴하고 아세라의 목상을 찍어 없앴습니다. 그로 인해 일신상의 위기를 맞이했으나 하나님은 그를 이스라엘의 구원자로 세우셨습니다. 기드온의 300용사는 고대 역사의 전쟁 역사와 방불할 정도로 빛나는 전투였습니다. 역사가 헤로도토스의 기록에 따르면 스파르타의 왕 레오니다스가 거느린 300용사는 페르시아의 크세르크세스가 이끄는 300만 침공군에 맞서 용감히 싸우다 장렬히 전사했습니다. 기드온의 300 용사는 잡다한 135,000명 미디안 연합군과의 싸움에서 희생자 없이 적을 완전 궤멸시키는 완승을 거두었습니다.
“주님, 할 수 있다면 제가 기드온이 되어 그런 싸움에 앞장서고 싶습니다. 군사를 넘어 용사가 되게 하옵소서! 적을 치기까지 칼이 손에 붙어버려도 적군을 찌르고 베었던 엘르아살처럼 주님을 위한 최측근의 용사로 삼아주옵소서! 이 땅에 산재한 각종 우상들을 부수고 자르고 뭉개고 태워버리렵니다. 그래서 아침이면 하나님의 백성들이 그 거룩한 싸움의 흔적을 목도할 수 있도록 만들겠습니다. 세례요한이 하나님의 날카로운 소리가 되고 루터가 하나님의 망치가 되어 거짓 우상의 세력들을 제거했듯이 ‘거룩한 파괴자’의 길을 걷게 하옵소서! 그리함으로 진정한 예배의 회복자가 되게 하여 주시옵소서!”
8. Life of the iconoclast
In the morning when the men of the town got up, there was Baal's altar, demolished, with the Asherah pole beside it cut down and the second bull sacrificed on the newly built altar. (Judges 6:28)
It's morning (daytime) on Day 8.
Gideon, whose name means "cutter" and "destroyer," was a remarkable idol destroyer in Israel's history. He destroyed Baal's altar and took down an image of Asherah, which led to a monotheistic crisis, but God raised him up as Israel's savior. Gideon's 300 Men was a battle so brilliant that it can be compared to the history of warfare in ancient history. According to the historian Herodotus, the 300 men of Leonidas, king of Sparta, fought valiantly against an invading army of three million led by Xerxes of Persia. Against a motley 135,000-man Midianite army, Gideon's 300 men won a complete victory, annihilating the enemy without a single casualty.
"Lord, if I can, I want to be Gideon and lead that fight. Make me a warrior beyond the military. Make me a champion for you, like Eleazar, who stabbed and cut through the enemy even when his sword was stuck in his hand before he could strike them down. Let me smash, cut, crush, and burn the various idols scattered across the land. So in the morning, we'll make sure that God's people can witness the vestiges of that holy battle. I want to be one of the closest warriors for you, Lord. Let me walk the path of the "holy destroyer," as John the Baptist became the sharp voice of God and Luther the hammer of God, removing the powers of false idols, so that in the morning the people of God may witness the traces of that holy battle! And let me be the restorer of true worship!"
8. 부를 노래가 그치지 않는 삶
사람은 학대가 많으므로 부르짖으며 군주들의 힘에 눌려 소리치나 나를 지으신 하나님은 어디 계시냐고 하며 밤에 노래를 주시는 자가 어디 계시냐고 말하는 자가 없구나. (욥기 35:9-10)
8일 저녁(밤)입니다.
학대를 당하고 혹독한 형벌에 비명을 지르는 사람들 가운데서 노래 부르기를 중단치 않는 이가 있습니다. 빌립보 감옥에 갇혔던 바울과 실라가 그런 사람이었습니다. 연약한 인간이 비명 대신 노래를 부를 수 있음은 하나님이 그에게 부를 노래를 주시기 때문입니다. 리처드 범브랜드 목사가 공산당국에 의해 체포되어 수감되었을 때 갖은 회유와 협박에도 굴하지 않고 기도하며 노래하고 춤을 추었습니다. 나를 지으신 이가 하나님이시므로 그분이 허락하지 않는 한 난 누구에 의해서도 멸하지 않습니다.
총칼이 무뎌지고 죽음이 피해갑니다. 사람들은 기적이라 난리법석을 해도 믿음의 사람은 그것을 당연한 신앙현실로 받아들입니다. 인생의 밤에 부를 노래마저 없다면 그 길고 긴 밤을 어찌 보내겠습니까? 늙기까지 자식이 없어 웃음을 잃어버렸던 사라에게 하나님은 ‘웃음의 근원’인 이삭을 선물로 주셨고 사라는 자신을 웃게 하신 그 하나님을 찬양했습니다. 울 수밖에 없는 환경에서 웃게 만드시는 하나님은 비명을 내지를 수밖에 없는 처지에서 부를 노래를 선사하십니다.
“주님! 제게 찾아온 밤 같은 환경으로 인해 감사 찬송합니다. 제가 밤에 처해 있기에 부를 노래를 하나님이 주실 것이기 때문입니다. 아직도 밤은 깊습니다. 부디 부를 노래를 주십시오! 1절만이 아니라 몇 절의 노래를, 짧은 노래가 아니라 긴 노래를 제게 주십시오! 그리하여 밤새도록 그 노래를 부르고 또 부르렵니다. 밤을 이기는 가장 확실한 길은 밤의 노래를 애창하는 것입니다.”
8. Life where the song of abundance never ceases
Men cry out under a load of oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful. But no one says, "Where is God my Maker, who gives songs in the night." (Job 35:9-10)
It's evening (night) on Day 8.
In the midst of being mistreated and screaming at harsh punishment, there are those who never stop singing. Paul and Silas in the Philippian jail were such people. When a frail human being can sing instead of scream, it is because God gives him a song to sing. When Pastor Richard Bumbrand was arrested and imprisoned by the communist authorities, he prayed, sang, and danced in spite of all the cajoling and threats.
Since it is God who made me, I am not destroyed by anyone unless He allows it; the guns are blunted and death escapes. People call it a miracle, but a person of faith takes it for granted. How will you get through those long, long nights if you don't even have a song to sing in the night of your life? To Sarah, who had lost her ability to laugh because she was childless until she was old, God gave Isaac, the "source of laughter," and Sarah praised the God who made her laugh. The God who makes you laugh when all you can do is cry gives you a song to sing when all you can do is scream.
"Lord, I thank you for the night-like circumstances that have come upon me. Give me a song to sing because I am in the night. The night is still deep. Please give me a song to sing! Give me a song not just a verse, but a few verses, not a short song, but a long song! So I will sing that song over and over again all night long. The surest way to beat the night is to sing the song of the night."
