26일 아침(낮)입니다.

중국 은나라의 시조 탕왕이 세숫대야에 ‘구일신 일일신 우일신(荀日新 日日新 又日新)’이란 문구를 새겼는데 “진실로 나날이 새로워지고 나날이 새로워지며, 또 날로 새롭다”는 뜻입니다. 비탄의 소리로 마음을 토하며 동족 사랑을 피력하던 예레미야는 그보다 본질적이고 핵심적인 새로워짐을 고했습니다. 인자와 긍휼입니다. 하나님의 절대적 사랑의 속성을 두 마디 표현으로 전했습니다.

헤세드와 라하밈은 호세아의 고멜을 향한 비극적 사랑을 통해 보여주신 하나님 사랑의 좌심방, 우심방입니다. 반역하는 인간을 향한 이 하나님의 사랑은 밖으로 퍼져가고 안으로 조여드는 원심적이고 구심적 사랑으로서 이슬 같고 불꽃같은 사랑입니다. 하나님의 위대하신 성실하심이 표징으로 나타난 바입니다. 단 몇 차례 임하는 은총이 아니라 아침마다 새로운 은총이니 놀랍기 그지없습니다.

“주님! 밤마다 변함없는 주님의 임재로도 가슴 뿌듯한데 아침마다 베푸시는 인자와 긍휼이 새롭기만 합니다. 저의 벅찬 영혼은 날개 없이도 은혜로운 날갯짓을 계속합니다. 가엽지만 결코 가엽지 않고 기품이 있는 것은 제 영혼을 지탱시키는 두 개의 기둥 곧 인자와 긍휼 때문입니다. 인자(헤세드)와 긍휼(라하밈)이 제 존재를 새롭게 만드시니 오늘도 갱신의 복음을 외치며 새 일을 행하시는 주님을 찬양하렵니다.”

26. Life renewed through love and compassion

They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. (Lamentations 3:23)

It's morning (daytime) on Day 26.

The founder of the Silver Dynasty in China, King Tang, inscribed the phrase "gu-ir-sin-u-ir-sin" (Verily, day by day it is new, day by day it is new, day by day it is new) on a three-dimensional basin, meaning "If you can one day renovate yourself, do so from day to day. Yea, let there be daily renovation." As Jeremiah poured out his heart in lamentation and spoke of the love of his people, he also proclaimed a more essential and core renewal: mercy and compassion. Two words that conveyed the attributes of God's absolute love.

Hesed and Rahamim are the left and right atria of God's love, demonstrated through Hosea's tragic love for Gomer. This love of God for rebellious humans is centrifugal and centripetal, spreading outward and tightening inward, a love like dew and like fire. God's great faithfulness was manifested in signs. It is amazing because it is not a grace that comes only a few times, but a grace that is new every morning.

"Lord, my heart is filled with your constant presence night after night. Your mercy and compassion are new every morning, and my overwhelmed soul continues its gracious flight even without wings. It is pitiful but never pitiful, and has dignity because of the two pillars that support my soul: lovingkindness and compassion. Since mercy (hesed) and compassion (rahamim) renew my being, today I will proclaim the gospel of renewal and praise the Lord who does new things."

26. 경륜과 섭리에 응답하는 삶

그러므로 깨어 있으라. 집 주인이 언제 올는지 혹 저물 때일는지, 밤중일는지, 닭 울 때일는지, 새벽일는지 너희가 알지 못함이라. 그가 홀연히 와서 너희가 자는 것을 보지 않도록 하라. (마가복음 13:35-36)

26일 저녁(밤)입니다.

밤은 깨어 있기보다 잠들기 쉬운 시간대입니다. 주님은 재림의 시기와 연관하여 비유의 말씀을 전하시면서 영혼의 경성을 당부하셨습니다. 부끄러운 모습으로 주님을 대면하지 않기 위해선 기도로 깨어 있을 수밖에 없습니다. 그 시간이 정해져 있지 않기 때문에 주님의 재림은 예측하기 어렵습니다. 경성을 위한 비책은 없습니다. 일상의 은혜를 흔들림 없이 지켜나가는 것이 유일한 해결책이라면 해결책입니다.

일상의 은혜를 곱씹어봅니다. 생기 넘치는 오전과 번잡한 오후가 지나니 사위가 고요한 저녁입니다. 밤이 깊어갈수록 세상은 고요로 뒤덮이고 만물도 적막 가운데 젖습니다. 벅차긴 해도 참으로 충일하게 살았던 하루였습니다. 익숙한 삶을 살아내는 것이야 그다지 어렵지 않지만 전혀 다른 환경이 전개될 때면 무척 긴장되곤 했지요. 특히 두려운 현실이면 정말 고통스러웠습니다.

“주님! 오늘을 원만하게 보낼 수 있도록 제 모든 삶의 환경을 조정해 주셨음에 감사드립니다. 아무리 지옥 같은 환경이었어도 지나고 보면 과연 주님의 크신 섭리와 은혜의 역사였음을 새삼 깨닫습니다. 늘 피할 길을 예비하셨고 감당키 어려울 때면 주님 스스로 처리해 주셨습니다. 오늘은 지난 은혜가 너무 커서 감사함으로 주님을 장시 생각하며 잠을 청해봅니다.”

26. Life responding to fate and divine providence

Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back- whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. (Mark 13:35-36)

It's evening (night) on Day 26.

Night is a time when it is easier to fall asleep than to stay awake. The Lord spoke a parable concerning the timing of His return, calling for the vigilance of the soul. The only way to avoid facing the Lord in shame is to stay awake in prayer. The Lord's return is difficult to predict because its time is not fixed. There is no secret for vigilance, if the only solution is to remain steadfast in our daily graces.

Reflect on the graces of everyday life. It's a quiet evening with my son-in-law after an energetic morning and bustling afternoon. As night falls, the world falls into silence, and all things are bathed in stillness. It was a day well lived, albeit overwhelming. Living a familiar life isn't that difficult, but when it's a completely different environment, it's very nerve-wracking, especially when it's a scary reality.

"Dear Lord, I thank you for orchestrating all the circumstances of my life so that I can have a smooth day today. No matter how hellish the circumstances were, when I look back, I realize that it was indeed a work of your great providence and grace. You always prepared a way out, and when things were too difficult to handle, you took care of it. Today, I am so grateful for the grace I have received in the past that I go to sleep thinking of the Lord with gratitude."
