27일 아침(낮)입니다.

어둠이 마지막 기승을 부리는 빛과 어둠의 경계에서 주님은 기도의 첫 숨을 내쉬셨습니다. 번잡한 곳을 피해 고요한 시간을 틈타 주님은 하나님과 소통하셨습니다. 사람들 사이에서 친밀함이 불러오는 것은 더 깊은 친밀함일 때도 있지만 때로는 경멸함을 불러와 관계를 어렵게 만듭니다. 하나님과의 친밀함에는 그런 경멸은 그림자도 드리우지 않습니다. 거룩함과 진실함의 이중 장치가 친밀함의 전후를 두르고 있기 때문입니다. 어둠이 끝나가고 새벽빛이 터 오르기 직전의 긴장 상태에서 주님은 가장 강력한 기도의 커튼으로 하루의 장막을 여셨습니다.

제가 열어가는 하루도 그런 동작이고 싶습니다. 새 날을 여는 특권과 환희로 노래하며 측정불가의 하루치 인생을 전능자의 손에 부탁드림은 연약함보다 신뢰의 극치에서 우러나오는 자연스러움입니다. 밤이 이르기 전에 으스름 저녁 그림자를 확인하고 아침도 되기 전에 빛의 활력을 가늠하는 것은 기도로 매일의 삶을 엮어가는 이에게 닭의 벼슬 같은 것입니다. 언제나 그 시간과 공간이 기도에서 수렴되어 죄를 수축시키거나 의를 팽창시키게도 하니 신비롭기 짝이 없습니다.

“주님, 밤에도 기도로 나아가지만 새벽 미명에도 기도로 나아가렵니다. 기도의 끝자락이 보이지 않아도 창조의 첫 날을 열어 가신 하나님의 의지를 따라 기도의 언어로 첫 시간들을 수놓아 가겠습니다. 오늘도 어제처럼 기도가 기쁨이게 하옵소서! 이 환희의 노역을 생명 다하는 그날까지 지속케 하옵소서! 이어지는 삶의 궤적 속에서 변함없으신 주님의 선하심을 찬양드립니다.”

27. Life embroidered with prayer at dawn

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (Mark 1:35)

It's morning (daytime) on Day 27.

On the edge of light and darkness, where darkness was making its last stand, the Lord breathed the first breath of prayer. Away from the hustle and bustle, He took advantage of the quiet to commune with God. What intimacy brings between people is sometimes a deeper intimacy, but sometimes it brings contempt, which makes relationships difficult. Intimacy with God casts no such shadow of contempt, for the double apparatus of holiness and sincerity surrounds the intimacy. In the tension between the end of darkness and the burst of dawn, the Lord opened the veil of the day with the most powerful curtain of prayer.

I want the day I open to be a similar gesture; singing with the privilege and joy of opening a new day and placing a day's worth of life beyond measure in the hands of the Almighty is a spontaneity born of trust rather than weakness. To check the shadows of evening before night and gauge the vitality of light before morning is a game of chicken for those who weave their daily lives in prayer; it's always a mystery how time and space converge in prayer to constrict sin or expand righteousness.

"Lord, I will go forth in prayer at night, but I will also go forth in prayer at the dawn. Even if we cannot see the end of our prayers, let us embroider the first hours with the language of prayer, following the will of God who opened the first days of creation; let prayer be as joyful to us today as it was yesterday. Let us continue this labor of joy until the day of our death! I praise the goodness of the Lord who has not changed in the trajectory of life that leads."

27일 저녁(밤)입니다.

세상과 사탄이 주는 유혹은 아주 교묘해서 벗어나기 힘들고 치명적이어서 살상력도 높습니다. 걸려들지 않는 것이 최상입니다. 유혹을 이기는 길은 기도로 스스로를 지키는 길뿐입니다. 주님이 유대인의 기도하는 습관을 따랐다면 하루에 세 번 기도생활을 이어가셨을 것입니다. 아침기도(샤하리트), 오후기도(민하) 저녁 혹은 밤기도(마아리브)는 사도들도 준수했던 기도생활입니다. 유혹자가 활발히 역사하는 한밤의 기도는 정말 중요합니다.

밤이 사람에게 두려움을 주는 가장 큰 이유는 홀로 남겨짐입니다. 한 이불을 덮고 자도 꿈은 달리 꾸듯 잠은 가장 개인적인 영역입니다. 주님의 변함없으신 임재마저 없다면 매일 맞이하는 밤은 적적함만이 기세를 부릴 것입니다. 꿈을 꾸든 아니든 긴 밤을 주님과 함께 보냄은 큰 안위와 기쁨이 됩니다. 동시에 홀로 있음의 실제를 의미 있게 느낄 수 있어 밤은 삶을 보다 진중하게 만들어줍니다.

“주님! 군중 속의 고독이란 말처럼 뒤섞여 웃고 울며 떠들던 하루의 번잡함 속에서 간혹 느끼던 철저한 외톨이 의식, 하나님 앞에서 단독자란 실존감은 얼마나 강력한지요! 그래서 주님과의 꿈속 재회가 더없이 그립고 사모됩니다. 이 밤 독대의 영광이 주어진다면 두 손 높이 들고 할렐루야! 형제와의 연합이 이루어진다면 손뼉 치며 주님을 찬양! 원수와의 격렬한 싸움이 벌어진다면 두 팔 걷어 부치고 무쇠주먹으로 놈의 명치끝을 가격하거나 한바탕 칼바람을 일으키렵니다. 사탄의 졸개들만 상대하느라 힘을 비축했으니 이젠 지옥의 용장급들이나 우두머리와도 한판 붙고 싶습니다. 백전불패의 사부이신 주님과 천상의 싸움꾼 미가엘 사숙의 비술을 터득한다면 승산이 있습니다. 주여, 도와주시옵소서!”

27. Life deepening the inner mastery of prayer

Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not fall into temptation." (Luke 22:39-40)

It's evening (night) on Day 27.

The temptations that the world and Satan offer are so insidious, so hard to escape, and so deadly. It's best not to get caught. The only way to overcome temptation is to guard yourself with prayer. If our Lord had followed the Jewish habit of prayer, He would have prayed three times a day. Morning prayer (shacharit), afternoon prayer (Minchah), and evening or night prayer (Maariv), which was also observed by the apostles. Praying at night, when the tempter is active, is very important.

The main reason the night strikes fear into a person is being left alone. Sleep is our most personal realm, as we may sleep under one blanket but dream differently. Without the Lord's unfailing presence, each night would be met with nothing but adversity. There is great comfort and joy in spending long nights with the Lord, whether dreaming or not. At the same time, the reality of being alone can be meaningful, making the night a more serious part of life.

"Lord, how powerful is the sense of solitude in the midst of a crowd, the sense of utter aloneness that I sometimes feel in the midst of the day's bustle of laughing and crying, the sense of being alone before God! That is why I long and long for a dream reunion with you. If I am given the honor of solitude for the night, I will raise my hands high and say, "Hallelujah!" If I am united with a brother, I will clap my hands and praise the Lord! If I am engaged in a fierce battle with the enemy, I will roll up my sleeves and punch him in the face with my mighty fists. Now that I've built up my strength against Satan's minions, I'd like to take on the masters and bosses of hell. If I can learn the secrets of the undefeated master, the Lord, and the celestial fighter, Michael the archangel, I have a chance to win. Help me, Lord!"
